Humberside Police Band concert : The atmosphere was certainly charged as the drum roll heralded the National Anthem to open the Mayor's Charity Concert in St. Augustine's Church, Hedon, last Friday evening. Humberside Police Band, under their Musical Director, David Crowther, took the audience on a musical world tour - visiting Austria, Hungary, Italy, Russia and on to America and elsewhere before coming back to Britain! Strauss's Radetsky March and the Hungarian Dance from 'Coppelia' both contrasted with 'All Through the Night' and toe-tapping music from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.' The Mayor, Cllr. Allen Marshal,l was allowed both his requests! The first, 'The Thieving Magpie' by Rossini, has just been arranged for the Band and is included in their new CD, due out in June. They then let rip with a selection of music from the Big Band era. The Band played their very own version of 'Happy Birthday' for one very surprised member of the audience, and there were surprises for everyone hearing a tone poem 'Country Village' - birds sang, including the cuckoo, the hunt rode past and the blacksmith was heard at his smithy. The concert ended with music from 'Oliver' with many of the audience joining in, before the Band stood to acknowledge the enthusiastic applause so well deserved. Refreshments were served during the interval, and afterwards Humberside Police Band were invited to the Town Hall where supper was served. The Mayor wishes to thank everyone for their support, particularly the ladies who served refreshments. Details of money raised by the event will be announced shortly. New displays for Hedon Museum : On Saturday,
May 3rd, the Mayor of Hedon, Cllr. Allen Marshall opened a new permanent
exhibition room at Hedon Museum. Featuring aspects of Hedon's long history,
'The Hedon Room' displays documents and artifacts, many of which have
been in storage until now due to lack of display space. As a start,
main room has areas devoted to civic history, the church, some trades,
World War 11, the school and pubs. There is still not enough space to
display all the accumulated artifacts, so the Museum plans to change
sections of the Hedon Room in due course, so that over time the many
facets of Hedon's proud history will be on show. The exhibition has
several 'hands on' items. Dr. Martin Craven has restored the bellows
once used at the plumbers, Palmers, in Souttergate, and a Victorian
post box, donated by Mr. Peter Bamford, is installed. Visitors may 'post'
their ideas for the Museum - collection times are every Wednesday and
Saturday at 4 p.m.! In addition, a permanent slide show is to be on
show upstairs - at the touch of a key, visitors can see aspects of Museum
organisation and in time, features of life in and around Hedon. The
Museum shop has been re-sited and hopes to be selling postcards produced
at the Museum in the near future, as well as the notelets and booklets
already printed 'in house'. Hedon Women's Institute : A talk is being give on the subject of "Resolutions" on Monday May 12th starting at 7.30 p.m. in the Allison Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, followed by a light supper. New members are always welcome. Church Services for Sunday May 11th 2003 |
