Week beginning February 10th 2003

Friendship Circle meetings: Preston : The Preston Friendship Circle will meet again on Tuesday February 18th at 8p.m. in the Methodist Church Hall. The speaker will be Mr. Charles Cane who will talk about Victim Support.

… and Hedon : The following day, Wednesday February 19th, the Hedon Friendship Circle will meet at 7.45 p.m. in the Methodist Church Hall, Hedon. The speaker for this meeting will be Mr. Keith Thomas.

Marriage Week 2003 : the week of February 9th to 15th is Marriage Week, and the Hedon Branch of the Mothers' Union are helping to celebrate it by putting on a display in Hedon Library entitled "A Century of Marriage." The display will include wedding dresses, photographs, certificates and anniversaries, as well as information about the "Four Keys to Marriage" - 'Dare to care,' 'Be open,' 'Give as well as Take' and 'Be peacemakers.' The Mothers' Union is an organisation based on Christian concern for families worldwide. The Hedon Branch meets in the Church Room in Magdalen Gate on the fourth Thursday each month at 2.00pm. Visitors are always very welcome. The speaker at the next meeting will be Christine Scott, who will give a talk about "Grandma's House and miniatures." There is also to be a lecture on "Marriage, Living Together and Family Life" at the Manor School in York on March 1st, given by Professor Adrian Thatcher. More details about this will be available in the display in the Library for anyone who might like to attend.

Road closure in Paull : regular travellers to and from Paull will by now have noticed that there are extensive road works being carried out between Paull and Thorngumbald and that the road is in fact closed until the end of this month. Although access is being maintained to homes and premises whose only available route is through the road works, including the museum at Fort Paull, the road is for the most part dug up and there is no through road for other traffic, and certainly not to and from Thorngumbald, so it is quite amazing to see the number of cars which are still ignoring the closure and driving through the road works from Thorngumbald to avoid the traffic on the Hedon bypass, oblivious of the hazard they are causing. I wonder just what their insurance status would be were they to end up in a ditch, having ignored the "Road Closed" notices?
