Week beginning July 7th 2003

Vandalism to lifebelt : whilst taking my early morning constitutional with my dogs the other day I came across the lifebelt which should have been in its box at the car park at High Paull but which had been removed and just abandoned, tied to the sea wall near the playing field. I managed to untangle it and replace it in its correct place, but it did occur to me - WHY? The lifebelt is there for the purpose of saving lives : do those who think it's merely a plaything ever stop to consider that the life it saves could be theirs - and equally, the life lost because of a missing lifebelt could also be theirs?

Holderness Digital Photography Competition : This is a follow on from successes in the last two years when about 70 competitors entered the first ever Digital Photographic Competition 2001 followed by a 20% increase in entries for Digital Photo 2002. In both years competitors have had the pleasure of seeing their entries hung in Hedon Museum for a month long exhibition. Sponsored jointly by D-Tec, Holderness Gazette and the Hedon Museum Society, Digital Photo 2003 is open to all residents of Holderness and will be for entries taken with a digital camera based on the theme of "Water". This may be widely interpreted to include anything from a dripping tap to paddling in the sea or bathing the baby. Registration of intention to enter may be by E-mail to ChickGen@compuserve.com or simply by delivering the entry to a D-Tec facility before the closing date.
There is no entry fee and prizes will be awarded in three categories: seniors, juniors and south Holderness school entries. First prize in each of the senior and junior categories will be £150.00 with runner-up prizes of £100.00. In the south Holderness schools category, the best entry from each participating school will be awarded a cash prize of £25.00. Entries must be delivered to Hedon Museum no later then 4 p.m. on Wednesday 24th September 2003. Judging will take place on Saturday 27th September 2003, and will be followed by a prize giving ceremony in Hedon Museum at noon the same day. The judges' decision will be final in all matters relating to the competition. More information is available on the D-Tec web site at: http://www.d-tec.org , and I will publish a reminder nearer the closing date : meanwhile, get those cameras out and get snapping!!

Garden Fete in Preston : The Rosedale Garden Fete is being held on Saturday July 12th from 1.00 p.m. until 5.00 p.m. in their grounds on Station Road, Preston (just outside Hedon, about opposite South Holderness School.) Admission will be free, and there will be all manner of the usual summer fair attractions! One of the aims of the event is to raise the profile of mental health and primary care in the community : Rosedale is an NHS facility, not part of the private sector as many people mistakenly believe, and all proceeds from the Garden Fete will go back into the Rosedale Community Unit.

Advance notice: Paull Summer Fair : this event was resurrected last year as part of the successful campaign to save Paull's village school, and proved so popular that it is being held once again this year. It will take place on Sunday July 20th, with an 11 a.m. start, on the river front sports field. The Fair will be free of charge to enter, and all proceeds from the various stalls, games etc. will go to Paull School, Paull Village Hall and Paull Sports Field. Events will include the Beverley Brass Band, various side stalls, various games, a pet show, children's fancy dress competition, fire engines and stocks, and there will be a Bar and a Barbecue.
The organisers are also hoping to hold a car boot sale - there will be space for approximately 20 pitches at five pounds a pitch. Any one wishing to take part in the car boot or requires any further information can contact either Mike Wasling on 01482 891437 or Dave and Di Edmondson on 01482 897678. Any prizes or unwanted gifts for the Tombola will also be very much welcomed - please contact the aforementioned if you have anything to offer.
