Week beginning September 8th 2003

Well-known artist to speak in Hedon : The South Holderness Countryside Society have been fortunate in securing Pollyanna Pickering, an artist of international repute, to speak at their next meeting. Ms. Pickering's work will be familiar to many people as her paintings of dogs, cats and wildlife have been reproduced on greetings cards for many years now. Her forthcoming illustrated talk, entitled "The Eye Of The Tiger," is to take place in the Alexandra Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, on Friday September 12th commencing at 7.30 p.m. Admission costs £3, with accompanied children free. Tickets and further information are available from Ann Fisher by telephoning 01964 527306.

Hedon "Thank you" : St Augustine's Church wishes to say a big "Thank you" to every one who supported in any way the New Clothes shop in the Church Room from August 19th to 22nd, either by providing goods, spending money or giving time. Especial thanks are sent to Tim and friends! They raised the amazing total of £1,516.00. To build on this success, another sale week of new winter clothes is being planned for some time in October. Watch this space for more details as I get them!

Compass and compacts - memorabilia from the great shipping lines : Ellerman Wilson, White Star and Cunard are the great shipping companies displayed in a new exhibition now on display at Hedon Museum. Hull's own Ellerman Wilson Line is a central feature of the Exhibition, which shows a remarkable collection of documents, photographs, newspapers and above all, artefacts that have been loaned to the Museum. A wash- stand from the Captain's cabin and a brush and crumb set from the dining room are just two of the many items to see. Ladies powder compacts, ash trays and serviette rings are also among the many items that all feature insignia of the three shipping lines. The sinking of an Ellerman Wilson ship in the River Humber is shown among many postcards displayed and there are letters from ship to shore. The tragedy of the 'Titanic' is recorded in newspapers of the time, together pictures and paintings of the liner and others of the White Star and Cunard Lines. 'Compass and Compacts' runs until Saturday, September 20th and the Museum, run by volunteers, is open every Wednesday and Saturday, 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments are available throughout.

Holderness Rangers : several of the girls of the Holderness Rangers have just returned from the south of France, where they were joined by girls from Kirk Ella Guides and Wolfreton Rangers for a wonderful water sports holiday in the sun. The weather was excellent, and their enjoyment of the sea, sun and heat was increased by messages from home telling them what awful weather you were having while they were away - they hope you appreciate that they have brought the sunshine back with them!! Rangers are the oldest section of the Guide movement, for girls aged 14 and over. Holderness Rangers, who meet weekly in Paull, recommence for the new session on Tuesday September 9th and if any girl in the area, regardless of whether or not she has ever been a Guide or Brownie, wants to come along details are available from me on 01482 896712.

Digital deadline approaching …. Time to get printing those digital photos out : now that the holidays are just about over, it's time to be selecting your best photos with a theme of "water" and sending them in for the D-Tec Digital Photo Competition. Who knows, you could be the one to win the £150 first prize! Entry is open to anyone in the Holderness area; photos must be mounted on A4 card so that they can be framed for the exhibition. On the back of the photo you must put your name and address, section entered (senior or junior - 16 and under) and the make and model of digital camera used to take the photograph. You must also sign it to confirm that the photo is your own work. Then simply send or take your photo to the Hedon Museum (behind Watmough's Arcade in Hedon, open Wednesdays and Saturdays) or Withernsea Museum on or before September 24th. Good luck!

The Sound of Brass : All Saints Church, Preston, are hosting a brass band concert with the title "The Sound Of Brass" on Friday, September 26th in the church, beginning at 7.30 p.m. Admission will cost £4.50, which includes a pie and pea supper, and all proceeds are for the church funds. For tickets or further information contact Jennifer Dimishky on 01482 897650 or telephone 01482 897327.

New Minister in Hedon : having been away for most of August I actually missed the arrival of the new Methodist minister for Hedon, Paull and district, Rev. Terence Porter. He has taken over from Rev. Ray Coates from September 1st, and I'm sure we all wish him well in his new post.
