Week beginning November 8th 2004

Mud magic at Paull! Last Saturday’s Family Fun Day at Paull, organised and run by the RSPB with help from local youth organisations, turned out to be a marvellous success. There was a constant stream of visitors young and old and they took part in a wide variety of activities, from face painting by members of the RSPB’s Phoenix youth group under the supervision of Community Artist Wayne … and “birdy” crafts to a highly entertaining puppet show for younger visitors. Paull School’s display of artwork and writing about the birds of the Humber was very popular, the guided walks on the Paull Holme Strays reserve attracted dozens of interested visitors, no doubt helped by the glorious sunshine, and the appeal by the Holderness Rangers, who are building a website for the Humber Estuary Experience, brought forth dozens of excellent photographs of the area for them to scan into their computer. The undoubted highlight of the afternoon, however, was “Mud Magic” – a child’s paddling pool filled with mud fresh from the estuary for the children to rummage in to see what ‘creepy crawlies’ they could find! I hasten to assure all the parents that they DID wear rubber gloves, and I really DID wash as much of the mud off them as I could before sending them home, honest …. if you'd like to see the evidence in photos, click here!

Holderness Lions ‘Farmers' Bingo’ : the next session of this very popular event will be on Wednesday November 10th at the Haven Arms, Hedon. The cost will be £1.50 for two books of ten games per book and there will be the usual prizes of good quality pork, etc. ‘Eyes down’ will be at 8.00 p.m. For further details please telephone Lion Eileen on 01482 890197.

Bumper Auction benefits community : Paull Community Trust would like to thank everyone who took part in their fundraising auction at the end of October, whether by donating items or bidding and buying. The organisers decided that however much was raised, it would be divided 25 – 75, 25% to go to the ROV* fund and 75% to Paull School. In the event, the wonderful sum of £2921.60 was raised, so £730.40 will be going to the ROV fund and the remaining £2191.20 to Paull School. The organisers have also asked me to thank Graham, the auctioneer, and their hosts Sid and Sue for such an excellent evening.
*ROV stands for Remotely Operated Vehicle, which is a device designed to give access to underwater locations not easily accessible by divers or by other means. ROVs are frequently used in the search for missing persons, and members of the Paull Community Trust have decided to make fundraising to provide such a machine one of their projects.
