Week beginning September 9th 2002

Traffic concerns for Hedon, Paull and Preston : the continuing road works at the Saltend junction are causing increased problems for drivers as the new roundabout and flyover system are being constructed. Those of us who travel this route regularly are now coming to terms with the complex layout of the traffic cones and hopefully approach the junction with extreme caution, but infrequent travellers and weekend visitors need to be aware that the turnoff to Paull is especially hazardous especially when attempting to reach the village from the west (Hull) direction and that they have no option but to stop in the middle of the road until it is safe to cross both Hull-bound lanes of traffic. If the drivers behind display impatience and honk (as they have done to me on several occasions) then it is safe to assume that a) they have no manners and b) they're not local so aren't familiar with the junction! When the traffic is particularly heavy I usually play safe and continue up to Hedon and then on into Paull; hopefully when the work is completed the junction will prove trouble free and will benefit all drivers passing through the area, but this particular writer has her doubts…………

Volunteers needed : Age Concern is currently recruiting volunteer staff for their Hedon Office. They especially need someone on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons between 12 noon and 3pm. Can you help them to help the older people for Hedon with information and advice? Perhaps you could spare two or three hours a week? Full training will be given, and the only qualifications needed are a friendly face, a welcoming smile and a caring attitude! Could this be you? Please call at the Hedon office at 22 St. Augustine's Gate or ring Susan or Denise on 014882 891558 or 01482 893191 if you want to know more or can offer to help in any way.

Disappointing start for Youth Work : the new venture for the young people of Paull got off to a poor start when "The Hole," an evening drop-in for youngsters over 9, had absolutely no customers! The organisers, themselves older teenagers working with adult supervision, expressed their disappointment at such a poor response. "They say there is nothing for them to do in Paull, but then when we arrange something for them, none of them can be bothered to turn up!" said one disgruntled girl, "We've given up our evening to put this on and this is what we get." The planned evening of pop music, organised games and somewhere to simply "chill out" and meet their friends (with tuck-shop, of course) may be attempted again later in the year, when cold weather and dark nights may make the thought of something to do in the Village Hall seem more inviting: if any of the youngsters in Paull would like to make suggestions as to what they would like to do at any future drop-in, they can put their ideas in writing and let me have them, either by hand (I think most of the youngsters know where I live!) or by email to ddavies@ourhouse.karoo.co.uk and I will see that they get passed on.

Tea Dances for the Autumn Season : from September 18th onwards a regular Tea Dance will be held every Wednesday in the Alexandra Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, starting promptly at 2pm through until 4pm. The cost will be £2, to include refreshments. Come along and enjoy an afternoon of ballroom, sequence and Old-Time dancing.

Wednesday Fellowship meetings : Hedon Methodist Church Wednesday Fellowship meets on the first and third Wednesday in every month from September until June, in the Methodist Church Hall, Church Lane, at 2.30pm. They have a wide variety of subjects on offer - on Wednesday 18th the subject is intriguingly entitled "Don't Do It!" Everyone is very welcome to attend, so why not go along and find out what it's all about!

Aerobics Class with a Crèche : Would you like to join an aerobics class and have someone look after your young children in a safe and secure environment? The new term's aerobics class held in Hedon can offer just this. Held every Tuesday in the Alexandra Hall, the class runs from 9.30am until 11am, making it ideal for those with children at school as well. Everyone is welcome, and concessions are available for those eligible. For further details contact the South Holderness Adult Education department on 01482 897534.

Vintage Car Rally at Paull : On Sunday September 15th a Vintage Car Rally takes place at Fort Paull and there will be a large collection of classic and vintage cars on display. The Fort is open from 10am until 6pm.
