Week beginning April 15th 2002

Most people have heard of "The Lions" but how many of you know who they are and exactly what they do? Well, now is your chance to find out! The Holderness Lions Club, a branch of Hornsea Lions, are very keen to meet anyone who might want to know about The Lions - either with a view to joining or maybe finding out how The Lions can help them. Recently the Holderness Lions Club has grown a little in numbers and has now almost reached double figures! They have raised money through various events - Tombola at Christmas, an Easter Egg competition and a Coffee Morning etc., and they have also given money away - recently to Burstwick Playgroup and Holderness Ranger Guides, who they very kindly helped with fundraising for International Guiding. The Holderness branch meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the Station Hotel in Hedon at 8.00 p.m. and visitors and new members are always welcome. For further help and information, please contact Eileen Smith, tel/fax 01482 890197.

Hedon Museum is staging a new exhibition, starting on Saturday April 13th and continuing until May 18th. This is being called 'The Reject Show' and stars a few Holderness painters who didn't get accepted for Ferens Art Galleries' Winter Exhibition! Undaunted, they have decided to exhibit elsewhere : the Impressionists, also rejected by their peers, did exactly the same and staged their own exhibitions, and look where it got THEM!! The exhibition will be in the Upstairs Gallery of the museum and will feature work by eight artists, each displaying several of their works, and all will be for sale.

Holderness Rangers, the older age group of Guides (14 plus) based in Paull, are starting a research project into the history of the Paull Lighthouses, and are anxious to hear from anyone who can help them with information and / or photographs. They are hoping to find out the history behind all the Paull lighthouses, not just the Old Lighthouse which is such a familiar landmark, but also the leading lights at Thorngumbald Clough. If you can help in any way with their research they would love to hear from you : please contact me on 01482 896712 and I will pass on contact numbers.

Paull Fort has another exciting display of military history planned for the weekend of April 20th and 21st. This time it is an American Civil War living history encampment weekend, with demonstrations by the American Civil War Society. The display will be of interest to all ages, and complements the many other historical exhibits at the Fort.

Paull Allotments begin their new year on Thursday April 18th, when annual rents are due and can be paid to the Parish Council prior to the Parish Council Meeting, at 7pm in Paull Primary School, Main Street, Paull. There are still a number of vacant plots available to rent - Paull allotments are not just for villagers but can be held by anyone interested. Rent is a mere £10 per year plus an initial deposit of £20.

A Jumble Sale is to be held in Paull Village Hall, Main Street, Paull, (opposite the lighthouse) on Saturday April 20th. Doors open at 2pm and admission will be 20p for adults and 10p for children. All proceeds will go to Village Hall funds.
