Week beginning July 15th 2002

Hedon Mothers' Union have a meeting arranged for Thursday 25th July at 2pm in the Church Room, Magdalen Gate, Hedon (at the rear of the Magdalen Gate Car Park.) The speaker will be Sister Gwen Agar.

There is still time to get in any last-minute entries for the Hedon In Bloom competition, which is being judged on July 23rd. Further details of categories etc. and entry forms are available from the Town Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, and there are cash prizes to be won plus trophies for each of the category winners.

The weekend of July 20th - 21st sees two large-scale village events taking place in the area : on Saturday 20th Preston holds its annual Village Show (detailed in this column last week and available as an archived file on http://www.local-news.freeservers.com if you wish to check back.) The show is being held at Sandhill Country Park and opens at 1.30pm, although competitors are reminded that they must stage their exhibits in the morning; entries close on July 18th so there is still time to enter those last-minute exhibits. Besides the horticultural, cookery and crafts show there will be lots to entertain all the family. Entrance to the show will cost 50p for adults and 20p for children.

The following day, Sunday 21st July, Paull Primary School's Summer Gala will take place on the village Sports Field on the river front. The event will be formally opened at 11 am by Helen Philpott, of BBC's Look North. There will definitely be something for everyone : a beer tent, a bouncy castle, a fancy dress competition, a decorated bike competition, "Kiddies' Korner," pony rides, tombola and a raffle, various stalls, cream teas, a fire engine display, karaoke, a barbecue, a judo display, a penalty shoot-out competition, races, a pet show, a display by the Red Cross, a treasure hunt, ice creams and a balloon race, are just some of the activities to be enjoyed. The event will run from 11am until the announcement of winners and prize-giving at 4pm. The event will take place whatever the weather and the organising committee would like to hear from anyone who can offer to loan them large frame tents, folding garden gazebos etc. for the day; also, help in setting up would be greatly appreciated - just turn up on the Sunday morning any time after 8am and lend a hand where needed. All proceeds from the Gala will go to the Paull Primary School Fund, as part of the village's campaign to keep their community's school open.

An advance notice for those of you who speak a little French and would like to brush up on your conversational skills : South Holderness Community Education will be running classes in "Conversational French for Improvers" after the summer holidays. These will take place at two venues and different times : on Tuesday afternoons in the Red Cross Hall, Sheriff Highway, Hedon, between 1.15 and 3.15pm, and on Thursday evenings at South Holderness School, Preston, in the adult education department, between 8 and 9.30pm. For further details or to secure a place in either of the classes, ring South Holderness on 897534 or visit the Community Education website http://www.comm-ed.eastriding.gov.uk
