Week beginning August 12th 2002

Hedon Playing Fields Association presents a Variety Show by Holderness Performing Arts. This will take place on the Alexandra Hall, St. Augustine’s Gate, Hedon, on Friday 23rd August starting at 7.30p.m. Come and put some money into the local community and help build a park for the children of Hedon, and have an enjoyable night’s entertainment at the same time - tickets will be £2.50 for adults, £1 concessions, or £5 for a family of four, all payable at the door.

A Nearly New Sale is being held from the 20th to the 23rd August inclusive, in the Church Room, Magdalen Gate, Hedon (entrance at the rear of the Magdalen Gate car park.) It will be open each day between 10 am and 4 pm and all proceeds will go to St. Augustine's Church Restoration Fund.

Fort Paull has two extremely contrasting displays scheduled for the coming weeks : on the weekend of August 17th and 18th the display is entitled “Gebirgsjager WW2” and features re-enactments of German troops and WW2 action; the following Bank Holiday weekend, 24th to 26th August, promises the most exciting and colourful displays of the season featuring the 18th century conflicts the Lace Wars, with the British Army’s 13th Foot and 10th Dragoon regiments and a Royal Navy Detachment - lots of action with cannon and musket, a period military encampment and associated displays etc. Fort Paull is open from 10am until 6pm six days a week.

Also on Saturday August 17th, the Kingstown Hotel on the outskirts of Hedon is holding a Family Fun Day. The hotel is situated just off the roundabout at the start of the Hedon Bypass if you are travelling from Hull, and is easily reached by travelling straight along Hedon Road and out past the city boundary along the A1033.

Starting on 20th August, Hedon Museum will be holding an important new exhibition of “The Baxtergate Treasure.” As with all its exhibitions, admission to the Museum (signposted from the car park off Iveson Road / Watmough’s Arcade) is free, and opening times are Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10am. to 4pm. There is always something of interest on display in this little museum, and refreshments are available.

Please can I add a reminder of the new drop-off point for articles for this column : the staff at the British Red Cross Society shop on St. Augustine’s Gate, Hedon, have kindly agreed to allow any information for me to be left at the shop, and I will be collecting it every week on a Thursday morning. It would be helpful if notices for forthcoming events were sent in at least two weeks before the date of the event so I can let everyone know in time.
