South Holderness School scholarships available : The trustees of the Cecil William Rutherford Scholarship Trust have money to give away!! But before you all rush to apply, there are strict conditions to these scholarships : first of all, applicants must be ex-pupils of South Holderness School. Secondly, they must have already started the course for which they are applying for a scholarship, and it must be at an institution of further or higher education in the United Kingdom. Lastly, the course must be at a level equivalent to or above Intermediate Level of the General National Vocational Qualification and must include at least a substantial element of one or more of the following five subjects: electricity (including electrician and electrical engineering), plumbing, building (including all building trades training that incorporate part-time study as well as related FE or HE full-time courses, e.g. quantity surveying), architecture or medicine (including nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, ophthalmic optics and other biomedical courses.) The scholarship can only be awarded after the qualifying course has been started.
The scholarship is the result of a bequest in the will of Ellen Palmer (1899-1991) who was born in Hedon and was educated at the local Hedon school. She never married but had a very full and interesting life, including working at Madam Clapham's, the Couture House in Kingston Square, Hull which made clothes for royalty. At one time Ellen modelled and acted as mannequin for costumes for the Queen of Norway whose measurements her own figure presumably equalled. She brought up and looked after her nephew Cecil, her sister’s child, and kept house for him until he died in 1990 at the age of 77.
Cecil Rutherford and his four younger brothers were all educated at St. John's Church of England School, Newland, Hull. The family over the years trained a number of apprentices most of whom would have come from the South Holderness catchment area, and Cecil himself did work for the then South Holderness Comprehensive School, Station Road, Preston.
Therefore these were the two schools chosen by Ellen Palmer as beneficiaries under her will : a scholarship has to be awarded to ex-pupils of each school every other year and the Trustees started with South Holderness School. The subjects chosen by her for scholarships, namely electricity, plumbing, building, architecture and medicine, represented work interests of various members of the family from her father's uncles to his grandchildren.
The money for the fund became available for use in 1995, and applications for this year are being invited now: contact the CWRS Trust, PO Box 69, Baker Street, Kingston upon Hull, HU2 8HS for the forms, which have to be returned before November 12th for consideration by the trustees in December.
