Week beginning June 17th 2002

Hedon United Football Club is seeking players to strengthen their squad for all four teams : the club runs three open-age football teams and one under 16 boys' team. The first team play in the Humber Premier League, the second and third team in the Hull Amateur League, all playing on a Saturday, and the boys play in the Sunday League. The club is particularly interested in recruiting more players of Humber Premier League standard, but will welcome new players at all levels. They are also trying to raise funds to fence the ground off to help reduce vandalism to the changing rooms, and have just completed putting up a barrier around the playing area. Hedon United is probably the only team in the local leagues that actually owns its own ground, and is currently trying to upgrade it. Training is held on Drapers Lane Ground starting in July. Anyone interested should contact the club's Secretary P. Dibnah on 01482 896056.

The meeting being held on Tuesday June 18th in Paull Village Hall, advertised last week, is a PUBLIC meeting for anyone interested in the discussions going on over the fate of Paull Primary School. Parents, friends and interested villagers are invited to attend, and this invitation is extended to anyone from Hedon too, as some of the proposals also directly affect the Hedon primary schools. The meeting starts at 7pm and early arrival is advised as the capacity of the Hall is limited.

The Environment Agency is putting on an exhibition about the river defence works being carried out at the Managed Retreat of the Humber Bank south of Paull. This is being held in the Town Hall, Hedon, on Tuesday 18th June and will be open from 12 noon until 7pm, and admission is free.

Hedon Town Council is once more holding its Hedon In Bloom competition. This is open to anyone in Hedon and offers cash prizes and trophies for the winners. Although judging is not until the end of July, interested gardeners are advised to get to work on their flowers now! Entry forms are available from Hedon Town Council at the Town Hall, St. Augustine's Gate Hedon, there is no entry fee and entries will be accepted right up until the day before judging starts.

Advance notice also for Preston Village Show, being held on Saturday July 20th at Sandhill Country Park (opposite Sandhill Garden Centre) - this is a true old-fashioned country village show, with all sorts of entertainment and competitions. There will be variety of horticultural classes for flowers and produce, cookery and craft classes and competitions for children. A particular feature of this year's show is a "Fur and Feathers" pet show, with prizes for all kinds of pets but NOT cats and dogs : there are such classes as "Best Talking Bird" and "Most Unusual Pet" and many others. The pet show is being sponsored by Pets R Wright and the Preston Show Committee has been very fortunate in securing the services of Geoff Capes as judge. Not only is Mr. Capes famous for his Olympic exploits and holding the title The World's Strongest Man, he also breeds and shows exhibition-class budgerigars. Schedules for all the competitions are available now from all the shops in Preston, Sandhill Garden Centre and several shops in Hedon too, giving plenty of time for hopeful competitors to prepare their exhibits. Also at the show there will be steam engines, children's rides, sports, a tug-o'-war, fancy dress competition, balloon race, cake and craft stalls, a car boot sale and much more. Truly a day out for all the family! The committee are always grateful for any extra help anyone can offer, either in the planning and setting-up stages or on the day itself.
