Week beginning September 15th 2003

Bus It! : Bus It, the region's mobile public transport information bus, will be visiting Paull for the first time, parking in Main Street between 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. on Tuesday September 23rd to promote the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's new Hedon and Withernsea area bus guide. It is a specially equipped low floor wheelchair-accessible single deck bus complete with timetables, computer journey planners, displays, a meeting area and TV/video. Expert staff will be on hand to answer any public transport inquiries. The latest easy to use guide, which will be available on the bus, includes all public transport services in the area from all operators together with maps and other useful travel information. It forms part of a series of area guides produced by the ERY Council which aim to make public transport information more accessible and improve awareness about what bus services exist. For further details contact Buscall on 01482 222222 (open from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily), log on to http://www.eastriding.gov.uk or pick up a free leaflet. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has also upgraded its Reduced Fare Leaflet. This reflects important changes which now gives men over 60 reduced travel on all local public transport. The new leaflet is also being distributed by Bus It. The visit to Paull is being undertaken in partnership with Paull Parish Council whose support is gratefully appreciated.

I heard it on the grapevine …… as I am writing this as usual on the Thursday before publication, my next bit of news hasn't hit the press yet, but it may well have done so before my column goes into print. Even so, don't stop me if you've heard this one : I have it from a Very Reliable Source that Paull is to get its long-awaited new school! According to my sources, the sum of £500,000 has been approved so that the 140-year old village school can have a new lease of life! Having lived in the village for 33 years now, and having heard rumours and promises of a new school from as long ago as 1976, I am delighted to hear this latest information which is doubly heartening after last year's epic struggle by the village to save the school from threatened closure. As we said at the time, a village school is the heart of its community and if it fails, the community surely will die. Now that Paull is to get this life-saving "transplant" we can look forward with confidence to a new lease of life!

The Sound of Brass : tickets are still available for the brass band concert being held at All Saints on Friday, September 26th in the church, beginning at 7.30 p.m. Admission will cost £4.50, which includes a pie and pea supper, and all proceeds are for the church funds. For tickets or further information contact Jennifer Dimishky on 01482 897650 or telephone 01482 897327.

Hedon Friendship Circle : regular meetings of the Hedon Friendship Circle have resumed and the next meeting has been arranged for September 24th, when Mr Alec Dodson will give a talk on "Horticultural Miscellany" at the Hedon Methodist Church, on Church Lane, starting at 7.45 p.m. Old and new members are always welcome.
