Week beginning September 16th 2002

Local History : For anyone interested in various aspects of local history, September brings an opportunity to further their knowledge. Firstly, there is an invitation to "Begin to trace your ancestors," when a five-week course with that title starts on Monday September 23rd at the Market Hill Centre, Hedon (the old village school building) and runs from 1pm until 3pm for five successive Mondays. A ten-week course on "The History of Hull" is also being run, this time on Wednesdays at the same venue, commencing on 25th September from 1pm to 3pm.

Concerts in Hedon : A season of Winter Classical Concerts commences in Hedon with the wind ensemble "Free Trade Winds" playing in the Alexandra Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, on Friday September 27th at 7.30pm. Tickets, which are for unreserved seats, cost £8, or £6 for the usual concessions. For more information please contact June Mitchell, the Community Arts Officer at the East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 01482 392651, or Hedon Customer Service Centre on New Road, telephone 01482 893555.

Prize winner for Paull Quiz : The "Numbers Quiz" organised by the Holderness Rangers as part of the fundraising campaign for Paull Primary School was won by Mr. Ken Franks, a resident of the village. There were eight all-correct entries in what was a very difficult quiz, so the final winner was decided by drawing the name out of a hat from the finalists. The draw took place on Tuesday at the Rangers' first meeting of this term and they presented a delighted Mr. Franks with the prize money the following day.

New speed limits in Hedon and Preston : motorists travelling through Preston and Hedon should have noticed that the speed limit signs have been relocated. The 40mph restriction sign is situated near the road junction north of Sandhill Garden centre and the 30mph zone now extends unbroken from beyond the Nag's Head in Preston, past Preston Primary and South Holderness Schools and right though to Hedon. The road past the schools is very good and it is all too easy for speed to creep up unintentionally, so drivers are asked to take extra care and keep an eye on their speedometers!

Hedon Friendship Circle : sorry this is a bit short notice, but the next meeting of the Hedon Friendship Circle will be on Wednesday September 18th at 7.45p.m. in the Methodist Church Hall. Rev. Ray Coates will be the speaker and his topic will be 'Ray goes back to school.'

Guides' birthday reunion planned : it is now ten years since the first Guide unit in Paull was registered on September 23rd 1992, and although 1st Paull Guides is no more, the first group of girls having grown up and moved on, Guiding is still very strong in the village in the form of Holderness Rangers. A reunion is being planned for all former Paull Guides, which will include a trip to the theatre and a meal out, so if any of them would like to get in touch with Dianne or Carol (who are both still at the same addresses as before) they can be included in the plans.
