Show time is approaching fast! This year's Preston Village Show is being held on Saturday July 19th on the Sandhill Country Park. There are still a couple of places left for craft stalls, and another two teams for the Tug Of War would make a really good competition. If you fancy entering, all you need is to get together a team of eight, male or female, it doesn't matter which - go on, have a go! The Show is a good family day out with lots to see and do. There are competitions for all ages, rides for the children, food stalls, craft stalls and side shows. Put the date in your diary, collect the schedule from local village stores and get your entries in. You too can be a winner. If you have any queries or want to take part, telephone 01482 827157, 01482 898467 or 01482 896456. Hedon Red Cross presentations : the annual presentation evening for Hedon Red Cross was held on Wednesday in Red Cross House, Sheriff Highway, Hedon, when certificates and awards were presented to candidates who had successfully completed a variety of First Aid courses. Members of the Red Cross who had taken advanced qualifications were joined by members of the general public and also some of the girls and leaders of Holderness Rangers, who had all trained with the Red Cross and gained First Aid certificates. The presentations were made by Cllr. Ann Suggitt, Mayor-elect of Hedon and a staunch supporter of the Red Cross, and a gift was presented to Mrs. Suggitt by the centre's organiser, Anita Hall, in thanks for her support. Two very different but equally enjoyable speakers completed the evening: the first, Mrs. Jennie Lee, gave an excellent presentation about the Guide Dogs For The Blind Association and the work done by these highly-trained dogs, ably assisted by Nesta and Hope, and after a break for refreshments, Alec Gill entertained everyone with a talk (and much audience participation!) on "Childhood Games." Exhibition closing soon : The exhibition of paintings by the Hedon Art Group on show in the Upstairs Gallery of the Hedon Museum will soon be coming to an end, so don't miss your chance to see this excellent display. There is a wide variety of subjects so there is bound to be something to interest everyone : landscapes and seascapes (including local views) mingle with beautiful flower paintings. This particular exhibition runs until Saturday, May 31st, but the museum, which is accessed from the cap park behind Watmough's Arcade, is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with different exhibitions throughout the year, and refreshments are always available. Off to London! Two of the girls from the Paull-based Holderness Rangers (the older teenage age-group of Guides) have been invited to go to London this coming weekend, all expenses paid, by Girlguiding UK who have asked them to speak at a national meeting in the nation's capital. Naturally the girls are both excited and nervous; we're all very proud of them, as it is a great honour to be invited. Since I am going with them, I will be able to tell you how it went in this column next week, but meanwhile I'm sure you'll all join me in crossing your fingers (and eyes, legs and toes too if you see fit!) and wishing them the very best of luck!
