Week beginning February 24th 2003

New exhibition in Hedon : A new exhibition has just opened in Hedon, as the group 'Local Leisure Painters' have been invited by Hedon Museum to display their work in the Upstairs Gallery at the Museum. The painters meet once a week in Hedon at an adult education class tutored by Patrington artist Janet Thackray. The work displays the use of different media through a wide variety of subjects and visitors will see many different artistic styles. The Upstairs Gallery hosts a wide variety of exhibitions, which change regularly every few weeks throughout the year. If any individual or group wishes to use this central display space further details can be obtained from the Museum Chairman, Gordon Rutherford (telephone 01482 899750), the Exhibition manager, Julie Marshall (01482 891050) or by calling at the Museum during opening times. The Museum is situated behind Hedon Town Hall and is reached via the Iveson Close car park and is signposted when open. It is open every Wednesday & Saturday, from 10am until 4pm, and refreshments are available.

Afternoon Tea with the Mayoress : The Mayoress of Hedon served Afternoon Tea in the Town Hall on Valentine's Day last Friday. The tables were decorated with vases of pink and white flowers, pink table napkins - and love-hearts! The Mayoress, Mrs. Julie Marshall, gave a short talk on the history of St Valentine's Day and the customs associated with it, together with food for lovers. (This was also the subject of the raffle prizes.) There was plenty of chocolate cake and heart shaped biscuits to follow the tiny sandwiches. The Mayoress wishes to thank all those who supported the event and especially the Mayor, who presented the speaker with a bouquet of red roses as befitted the occasion. The excellent sum of £128 was raised for the Mayor's Charity Fund.

Piano Favourites : The East Riding of Yorkshire Council presents "Piano Favourites," a recital by Elizabeth Altman. The programme will include music by Beethoven, Chopin and Rachmaninov and will take place in the Alexandra Hall, St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, on Friday February 28th commencing at 7.30 p.m. Tickets will cost £8, or £6 for the usual concessions, and will be available from the Council's Customer Service Centre on New Road, Hedon, telephone 01482 893555 or 01482 392651.

Flamenco night in Hedon : thanks : The Mayor of Hedon, Cllr. Allen Marshall wishes to thank all those who supported his recent Charity Night. It was a most successful evening. The performers, 'Primor Flamenco,' were really outstanding and produced sensuous dancing and stunning guitar playing that held the audience spellbound. The Mayor and Mayoress also wish to thank the fellow councillors and friends who gave such valuable support, both before and during the evening. The event raised the magnificent sum of £405 for the Mayor's Charity Fund. Thank you.

New Over-60s Club : the newly-formed Paull over-60s club meets every Tuesday in the Crown Inn, Main Street, Paull, at 1.30pm for a afternoon of good company in congenial surroundings, the occasional game of bingo, and maybe even a drink or two …. ! New members are warmly invited and will be made very welcome - no need to book, just turn up at the Crown any Tuesday afternoon. It doesn't even matter if you're not quite 60, either!

Paull Primary School : after a traumatic year in 2002, when the village school came to the verge of being closed for good and was saved only after a fierce struggle with the support of parents, friends and villagers, not to mention the Parish Council, things are beginning to look up. The new Head Teacher is now nicely settled in and the school is coming along well, and now a little bird tells me that there is a distinct possibility that there will be some new building work starting in a couple of years. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that the plans don't end up on the wrong end of financial cutbacks!

Theft in Paull : the village of Paull is not exactly a hotbed of crime but we do often seem to be on the receiving end of certain crimes committed outside our area, when stolen vehicles are dumped and even burnt out on our roadsides. There is, however, a different type of car crime starting up here : the theft of number plates from parked cars! Is it my imagination, or has this really coincided with the introduction of "Congestion Charging" in London? Are our number-plates being sold on the black market in the nation's capital? We will find out for sure when the bills for unpaid charges on our cars start to drop onto our doormats!
