Week beginning June 21st 2004

Hedon in Bloom : if you want to enter this annual competition and haven’t already contacted the council or filled in an entry form, this is your very last chance to do so. The council have told me that the absolutely final date for entries is Wednesday 23rd June, as they have to work out the route for the judging on Saturday 26th and once that’s decided, no more gardens can be added.
The gardens will be judged by Doug Stewart, the Radio Humberside presenter, and all gardeners in Hedon are welcome to enter the competition. Don’t worry if you’re not sure which category to enter your garden in, as this year the judge will place your garden into the appropriate category for you. These categories are : All Year Round Garden (small, medium and large), Most Colourful (again, separate categories for small, medium and large), Previous Winners in any category, Container or Patio Garden, and a children’s category for the best Busy Lizzie. Please contact the council at the Town Hall, Hedon , telephone 01482 898429, if you would like to enter. The council’s offices are open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

Hedon Open Gardens Weekend : while we’re on the subject of gardens, this annual event, which gains popularity year-by-year, has just been held and although the weather on Saturday threatened at times, on Sunday it provided glorious sunshine. Twenty gardens were open for viewing around six weeks earlier than last year and as expected, the timing probably favoured those gardens with a greater perennial content rather than new-planted annuals which have some way to develop to reach their best. The standards of the gardens were excellent and the event provided much pleasure to viewers, some of whom had travelled as far as from South Yorkshire and Sussex, and to garden hosts alike. At the time of writing I do not know the proceeds figure but will let you know as soon as I have it; however much was raised, it will be a welcome addition to the church restoration and development fund.

Hedon Summer Fair : there will be a summer fair at ‘Allendale,’ 21 George Street, Hedon, on the morning of Wednesday June 23rd between 9.00 a.m. and 12 noon. There will be a raffle, a Tombola, Jumble and Cake stalls, and refreshments will be provided all for an entrance fee of just 20p. All comers will be very welcome.

Fundraising Day in Paull : June 21st – 28th is Myeloma Awareness Week and there will be a fundraising day for the International Myeloma Foundation at 1 Ferryman Park, Paull, on Monday 28th June from 10.30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 2.00 p.m. until 4.00 p.m. All enquiries to Beryl Marshall on 01482 890832,

Sewing Display in Hedon : I have very few details of this event, other than that there will be a Sewing Display in St. Augustine’s Church, Hedon, between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. on Saturday June 26th. Given the beauty of the surroundings, and the quality of previous displays held there, I think it could be well worth a visit.

Music afternoons in Hedon : If you are looking for something to while away your Thursday afternoons in Hedon you could do a lot worse than drop in to the Alexandra Hall. Regular sessions are held offering dancing, sing-alongs, prize bingo and a raffle, all compèred by Ernie (who is also the vocalist), with Tom at the keyboard. The afternoons are Big Band style and run from 2.00 until 4.00 p.m. at an admission price of £1.25 which also includes tea and biscuits. Why not go and dance, sing along, or just listen and tap your feet to the music.

Church Garden Parties : both Paull and Hedon parish churches are holding their annual garden parties somewhat later than usual, St Andrew’s Paull being on Saturday July 10th and St Augustine’s Hedon on Saturday July 3rd. Do put these dates in your diaries now, and I will give you all the details nearer the dates.
