Week beginning June 23rd 2003

Mayor's "Thank yous" : Cllr. Ann Suggit, the Mayor of Hedon, has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone who supported two recent events in the town. The first, the Hedon Civic Service and parade last Sunday, was very well attended, with the church full and the streets lined to watch the parade on a lovely sunny day, and the second, Hedon Catholic Church garden party, raised a magnificent sum in excess of £1,400, which is to be divided between church funds and overseas aid charities. Well done, everyone!

New Scout Hut for Hedon : on Monday June 23rd the Mayor of Hedon, Cllr. Ann Suggit, will be "cutting the first sod" for the new Scout Hut which is to be built on Sheriff's Highway, Hedon. She will be assisted by the Hedon Cub Pack, who are currently meeting in the Red Cross building next door to the site but looking forward to being back in their own premises once more. Fundraising for the project is well under way and donations are always acceptable - why not go to watch the ceremony yourself, which is scheduled for 7.15 p.m.?

Fire Station Open Day : Preston Fire Station, which is on Station Road, Preston, just past the schools, is holding an Open Day on Saturday June 28th from 1.00 p.m. until 5.00 p.m. There will be a variety of stalls, live demonstrations, displays and refreshments.

Reminder - Hedon Church Garden Party : the St. Augustine's Church Garden Party is being held once again at The Paddock, Station Lane, Hedon, by kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. H. G Procter. It will take place on Saturday 28th June and will be officially opened by the mayor of Hedon, Cllr. Ann Suggit, at 2.00 p.m. There will be a wide variety of stalls and entertainments on offer : stalls will include cakes, children's games, craft, plants, "white elephant," second-hand jewellery, a raffle and Tombola, and there will be a clown and a giant slide for the children, with the Lyn Wilson Dancers providing entertainment during the afternoon. Ice-creams and teas will be available throughout the afternoon, and the admittance price will be 25p, with children free of charge.

Hedon In Bloom : Hedon Open Gardens weekend will be held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd August in conjunction with the Hedon In Bloom competition organised by Hedon Town Council. The competition is open to anyone in Hedon and offers cash prizes and trophies for the winners. Although judging is not until the last week of July, interested gardeners are advised to get to work on their flowers now! Expressions of interest should be made to Diane Storr on 01482 897711, and entries can be made at any time right up until the judging date.

Car in the River! The case of the car in the river at Paull (it was pushed in off the car park at High Paull, after being burnt out - and presumably stolen) is now with the Environment Agency as once again no-one seems to know whose responsibility it is. There are moves to repair the damaged section of fence, but the car may well end up being a similar case to the carcase of a cow which graced Paull's beach a few years ago (although a lot less smelly!) The cow's carcase was there for a couple of years whilst the various agencies argued over whose responsibility it was, until it eventually rotted away and was dispersed by the waves; hopefully the carcase of the car will not take as long to disappear!

Horse riders on local roads : the recent series of fine weekends, light nights and the approaching summer holidays have brought more and more horses and ponies onto the roads in the area, and motorists are reminded to take particular care when approaching them, particularly from behind. Most of the ponies being ridden on the roads are pretty "bomb-proof" but even so, motorists should give them a wide berth and please don't sound your horn or rev your engine whilst passing them (as I have seen done on numerous occasions.)
The weekend's tragic incident at Paull, in which a horse was killed and several people injured, was a terrible and probably unavoidable accident, and I'm sure you will join me in wishing all those involved a speedy recovery.
