Week beginning September 23rd 2002

National Competition success for local girls : the girls of Holderness Rangers are celebrating their success in a national competition, organised by The History Channel in conjunction with English Heritage, with the title "Our History, My Heritage." Entrants were asked to research an aspect of the history of their local community and the best entries that were submitted to the project have been awarded prizes and will also be made into short TV programmes to be broadcast in Autumn 2002. The girls chose to research into the history of the lighthouses at Paull, since although some of them come from Hedon and Hull as well as Paull, the Rangers meet each week in Paull village hall, right opposite the old lighthouse. Their entry included photographs, maps and historical documents and they presented it all on a website - http://www.paull-lighthouses.co.uk - for all to see. They spent many hours working on their project and have been rewarded by being chosen as runners up in the Youth Group section by a panel of judges, which included Loyd Grossman. Their entry has been described as having "stood out within its category" and the Rangers have won a digital camera for the group plus certificates and individual prizes for all the group members, and hope to see their efforts on national TV too!

Photography competition winners : the judges of the digital photography competition, Organised by D-Tec and hosted by Hedon Museum, had an arduous task in selecting a winner. Many excellent photographs were submitted for the competition, including entries from Patrington, Keyingham, Withernsea High and South Holderness schools, plus Tranby Croft school, with subjects as diverse as canoeing, steam trains, roller skates and a rusting tipper-truck! The competition judges were Arthur Allott, Tony Craven, Kinuka Ketley, Barry Ketley and Gerda Cox from BP Sirius, who sponsored the competition prizes along with Birds-Eye Walls and The Holderness Gazette. Prize winners in the different sections of the competition were: Senior, 1st No. 85 Andrew Davies of Paull, 2nd No. 80 G. J. Spencer of Hedon. Junior (under 16), 1st. No. 28 J. Lister of Hedon, 2nd. No. 25 Melissa Tronmer of Ottringham, and schools winners were : Patrington - No.23 Natalie Garland; Keyingham - No.19 Tony Richardson; Withernsea High - No. 41 Freya Johnson; South Holderness - No. 16 James Harrison and Tranby Croft - No. 30 Serena Waters. A list of winners is displayed with the photographs at Hedon Museum and all the entries will be on display until October.

Alexandra Hall Open Day : the Alexandra Hall, on St. Augustine's Gate, Hedon, is holding a special Jubilee Year Open Day on Saturday September 28th. The hall and all its rooms will be open to the public from 10am until 4pm and it will present an opportunity for people to see the wide variety of accommodation available for hire in the hall. Some of the groups and organisations already using the Alexandra Hall will also be putting on displays of what they have to offer, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

'Tea with Dorothy Wordsworth' : Tickets were sold out for 'Tea with Dorothy Wordsworth' last week in the Town Hall in Hedon. Afternoon Tea was once again hosted by the Mayoress of Hedon, Mrs Julie Marshall, and the guests of honour were the two speakers, Hedon authors Margaret and Robert Cochrane. Margaret Cochrane spoke of the Wordsworth family and painted a verbal picture of their life in the Lake District village of Grasmere during the early years of the 19th century. Dorothy's life was devoted to the welfare of her brother, the poet William Wordsworth. As well as looking after the house, cooking, sewing, gardening, decorating - having first made her own paint -Dorothy also wrote out William's poems as he did not like the act of writing! She also described the difficulties of baking in those days when self-raising flour was unknown and oven temperature was regulated only by the fire in the range, whilst Robert Cochrane recounted the financial problems of the Wordsworths, but remarked on their purchases of tea from Twinings - specialist teas which they enjoyed but which nevertheless cost a serious amount of money. The talk was followed by afternoon tea, which echoed the recipes which Dorothy Wordsworth would have used, among them honey cakes and gingerbread, but guests were glad to know that giblet pie was not on the menu! Even the raffle prizes were edible - gingerbread, Grasmere honey and home made jam were just some of the things to be won. Guests were able to buy the authors' book on 'Dorothy Wordsworth's Housekeeping' and Mr & Mrs Cochrane kindly donated their profits for the afternoon to the Mayor's charity. The Mayoress thanked all who had supported the charity event, which together with donations and the raffle, raised a total of £226. The next 'Afternoon Tea' will be held on Tuesday, October 29th.

Paull fundraising efforts : the children, staff, parents and friends of Paull Primary School are undertaking a fund-raising sponsored walk on September 29th when they will walk the five miles along the country paths from Paull to Hedon; only a couple of days later, on October 1st, Holderness Rangers will undertake the same task (only in their case, "sponsored stroll" may be a more apt title!) to raise money for their own unit funds. In such a small community it is inevitable that once again the same people will be asked to sponsor both groups, but as they both do have to rely a great deal on their own efforts and public support, please give generously!
