Week beginning November 25th 2002

Christmas reminiscences : Hedon Mother's Union will be meeting again on Thursday 28th November at 2.00 p.m. in Hedon Church Rooms, Magdalen Gate (entrance at the back of the car park opposite Nippers' Nursery.) The speaker will be Mr. K.J. Thomas who will be talking about "Christmas in Wartime."

Christmas lights in Hedon : Friday November 29th will see the Annual Christmas Light Switch-on at 6.30 pm in the Market Place, Hedon. The lights will be switched on by the Mayor of Hedon, Cllr. Allen Marshall and then the Christmas festivities will begin! Santa will be in attendance in his Grotto and there will be various stalls around the Market Place. The shops will be open late, and there will be rides, a bouncy castle, barrel organs and carol singing around the tree - everything you need to get you into a Christmas mood.

Red Cross Christmas bargains! The Hedon Red Cross Charity Shop, on St. Augustine's Gate, now has its Christmas stock on display. There is a very wide selection of excellent-quality nearly-new clothing, with lots of lovely party outfits for all ages and sizes. The shop is open from 10am until 5pm, and on Friday 29th will be staying open until 9pm for the festivities accompanying the Christmas lights switch-on, so do come and browse through the rails to find yourself a bargain!

New exhibition in Hedon : Wednesday 27th November sees the opening of a new exhibition in the Upstairs gallery of Hedon Museum, by the Ferriby artist John Fairclough, entitled "Paintings and Poetry.' There will be lots of oil and watercolour paintings on display - most for sale, should you see one which takes your fancy - and some very good poems. The Museum, situated off Watmough's Arcade, is open every Wednesday and Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and admission is free.

Remembrance Day in Paull and Hedon : I have been asked by the Paull War Memorial Committee and several people in Hedon, particularly Cllr. Ann Suggitt, to say "Thank you" to everyone concerned with the Services of Remembrance held on Sunday 10th November and the two minutes' silence on Armistice Day itself. Hedon's parade was very impressive, with The Royal British Legion, Hedon Army Cadets and the Uniformed Youth Organisations marching round the town, but Paull had the better of the weather, holding their parade and service in the afternoon after the rain had stopped, and their open-air parade and service was very well-attended, with representatives of The Royal British Legion, Hedon Army Cadets and Holderness Ranger Guides carrying standards in the parade.

Reminder : please can I ask you to send items to me in good time : this column is submitted every Thursday for publication the following week, so items need to be sent in at least a week, and preferably ten days, before the event takes place. I have recently had items sent to me for publication which I would gladly have included if they hadn't arrived too late. My apologies if you've sent me something and it hasn't been published, but timing is crucial.
