Week beginning July 1st 2002

Hedon Museum bursts into flower at the weekend : on Saturday, the museum opens a new exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery. Entitled 'Flowers and Gardens', the exhibition features paintings based on that subject. This year, the garden competition 'Hedon in Bloom' is to be held in July and so residents and visitors alike will have a great opportunity to see beautiful gardens in reality and through artistic interpretation. Mr. David Wilkinson, the judge this year of the 'Hedon in Bloom' competition, is being welcomed at the Museum to open the exhibition at 10am on Saturday, after which the Museum is open to the public as usual - Saturday and Wednesday, 10am to 4pm. Refreshments are available.

The committee of Hedon Friendship Circle would like to say a big thank-you to all those who helped to make the recent Flower Festival such a success. The arrangements were beautiful and were enjoyed by over 300 people over the three days of the Festival. They were all made possible by people giving their skills, donations and time and this was a memorable way for the Friendship Circle to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Paull Parish Council are now close to taking over control of the Public Toilets in the village, closed last year as part of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's cost-cutting exercise which saw the closure of so many public conveniences throughout the county. A referendum held in the village gave a result that the majority of respondents wished to see the toilets reopened, so the Parish Council has been negotiating with the County Council to arrange the transfer and the process is now almost completed. Hopefully, the toilets will be cleaned, refurbished and opened to the public once more, in the very near future.

Holderness Rangers, the Guides group for girls over 14, have entered a project in the History Channel's "Our History - My Heritage" competition. The girls, who meet every week in Paull and come from Paull, Hedon and Sutton, have spent the last couple of months doing in-depth research into the history of the lighthouses at Paull, and have submitted their work to the judges. If successful, their project will be made into a television documentary programme and the group will win a video camera; meanwhile, everyone can see their work on their website, http://www.paull-lighthouses.co.uk

The annual Church Garden Party in Paull will be held once again on Saturday July 13th at 1 Paghill Estate, Paull, by kind permission of Mr. & Mrs. Dud Hulme. The garden will be opened at 2pm. There will be a variety of stalls and sideshows, and refreshments will be available. Admission will be only 10p and all proceeds are for St. Andrew's Church funds.

Also on Saturday 13th July, The Rosedale Community Unit is holding a Garden Fete from 1pm until 5pm in their grounds on Station Road, Preston (just outside Hedon.) Admission will be free, and there will be a Fancy dress competition, pet show, car boot sale, Tombola, nearly new stall, bric-a-brac, and live music by Pete Travis plus many other attractions suitable for all the family. One of the aims of the event is to raise the profile of mental health and primary care in the community : Rosedale is an NHS facility, not part of the private sector as many people mistakenly believe, and all proceeds from the Garden Fete will go back into the Rosedale Community Unit.

The Holderness Volunteer Centre, with premises in Market Place, Hedon, exists to co-ordinate needs and available assistance throughout the voluntary sector in the whole of Holderness. They would like to invite all interested members of the public to their AGM, which this year is being held in Withernsea, in the Victoria Tavern, Queen Street, on Friday 12th July starting at 10 am.
