Week beginning September 29th 2003

"Wild Things" at Hedon : one of Hedon's most eagerly awaited fashion events started on Monday when the Hedon Red Cross shop opened its doors to reveal a range of "New To You" fashions for adults and children, all on an "Animal" theme … leopard, tiger and zebra prints, leather jackets and camel and Fake Fur coats - they've got the lot! The shop also stocks a wide range of clothing (including many designer labels and children's clothing), fancy goods, games, toys and books, and is always looking for donations to maintain stock levels. The stock is of consistently high quality, leading to one customer to refer to it, only half-jokingly, as the "Harrods of the North!" In situations of crisis the Red Cross is a ray of hope, providing help and support to people in need all over the world. Nationwide - even world-wide - fundraising goes to finance international Red Cross work, but funds raised by local shops contribute towards community services within their own area. In Hedon the Red Cross shop receives lots of local support and has many 'regulars' who come in to browse or just for a chat with the volunteer staff, who are on first-name terms with many of their customers. Julie Screeton, the shop's manageress, stresses that they are always on the look-out for more volunteers to help out in the shop. Anyone who could offer to work for two hours a week (or more) should contact Julie on 01482 890668 - they will be welcomed with open arms! The British Red Cross in Hedon would like to thank everyone who has supported them over the years and look forward to seeing old and new customers and volunteers. (Photos can be seen here.)

Paull Churchyard : I reported the excellent result for St. Andrew's Paull, last week - they came first in a Churchyard Competition organised jointly by the Diocese of York and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust - and now I have been asked to pass on special thanks to Beryl Marshall, who was the 'brain' behind it all, and David Horsley who provided 'labour.' Well done to everyone concerned - the churchyard is a credit to you, and a worthy winner of the competition.

Digital Photography Competition results : Judging for D-Tec's third annual digital photographic competition took place in Hedon Museum on Saturday 27th September where entries will be on public display in the Picture Gallery every Wednesday and Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm until Wednesday 22nd October 2003. The theme this year is "Water" and prizes of £150 and £100 were awarded for first and second place in senior and junior classes with some special prizes for school entries. Overall winners were Terry Butcher of Withernsea in the senior class and Dale Baxter of Withernsea in the junior class. Runners-up were Marie Briglin of Withernsea in the seniors and Mark Rawson of Ottringham in the juniors. Special prizes of £25 were awarded to Chris Thompson of South Holderness, Tom Johnson of Keyingham, Inmans Primary, Hedon County Primary and Thorngumbald schools.
D-Tec sincerely thanks the following for their support in sponsoring this event: Hedon Museum, The Holderness Gazette, Holderness Online, Read's Furnishing of Hedon, B P Sirius, Holderness Lions, Ripon Farm Services, The Livewire Computer Club, Green Print of Hedon, Ottringham Computer Club and Jessops Photographic suppliers. Thanks also go to Paul Scudamore and Arthur Allott for organising the event and their great efforts in framing and hanging the photographs as well as to the judges, Tony Craven, Julie Marshall, Kinoko and Barry Ketley and Colin Brammer.
Entries (161) are almost double what they were last year (84) and there has been an outstanding improvement in quality as contestants have become more familiar with the software available to process their pictures. Another pleasing feature is an increase in the entries from members of the same family as the technology becomes more acceptable across the generations. Hopefully as many of you as possible will visit the display between now and 22nd October as there really is something of interest to everybody.
