Week beginning September 30th 2002

Hedon Friendship Circle : The next meeting of the Hedon Friendship Circle will be on October 2nd, at 7.45 p.m. in the Hedon Methodist Church Hall. Mr. David Brabbs will speak about the 'Perils and pitfalls of a Church Organist'. All are welcome to attend.

Harvest Celebrations in Hedon : The first weekend in October looks like being a very busy one : on Friday 4th October the Harvest Festival will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s church, Hedon, at 7.30 p.m., followed by a Harvest Supper in the Allison Hall on St. Augustine’s Gate. The Mayor, Councillor Allen Marshall, and members of Hedon Town Council will attend and everyone is invited to participate in this annual celebration.

St. Augustine’s Open Day : The following day, Saturday 5th October, is St. Augustine’s Open Day. The church will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with guides available to show visitors round and refreshments will be available all day. A special feature of this annual event is the opportunity to climb the church tower. St. Augustine’s Church, whose building was commenced in 1190 AD, is known as “The King of Holderness” (St. Patrick’s in Patrington being “the Queen”) and its magnificent tower is a distinctive landmark for many miles around. If the weather is clear on Saturday, visitors to the tower can be promised an unsurpassed view of the whole of south Holderness from the top, making the climb up all those stairs well worth the effort! Whatever you do, if you do decide to make the climb to the top, don’t forget your camera!

To complete the weekend, St Augustine’s church will celebrate a Harvest Communion on Sunday 6th October.

Guides continue their adventures : The girls of Holderness Rangers are still recovering from all the attention paid to them by the media after their success in the English Heritage and History Channel competition, (and are definitely still not used to giving radio interviews!) but are now preparing for their next adventure : four of the girls are planning to take part in the East Yorkshire Guides International Selection Camp over the weekend of the 4 – 6th October, hoping to be selected to represent their county and country at Guiding events and camps abroad. Most of the Rangers have “served their apprenticeship” with the Guide movement, coming up through Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, having survived the embarrassment of leg-pulling and name-calling at school (for being a Guide is seen as distinctly “un-cool,”) and have now reached a level of maturity which makes them eminently suitable to act as ambassadors for their generation as well as their country. They will be spending the weekend at camp performing various tasks and undergoing a series of tests, hoping to convince the assessors to choose them to travel abroad as representatives of Girlguiding UK.

Paull Harvest Celebrations: Paull Methodist Church Harvest Festival will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Sunday October 6th. Gifts of produce will be received in the church on Saturday 5th from 2 p.m. onwards.

Holderness Lions Club meeting : The newly-formed branch of the Hornsea and Holderness Lions meets every second Tuesday in the Station Hotel, Souttergate, Hedon, at 8 p.m.. New members are always welcome to come along; telephone 01482 890197 for further details or just turn up to any meeting.
