Week beginning June 10th 2002

There seems to be a definite post-Jubilee lull in activities in the three villages on my "patch" and after successful celebrations on the Jubilee weekend itself things are slowly getting back to normal. Hedon's firework display was particularly memorable and was clearly visible even from Paull - MUCH better that watching the official fireworks on the telly! All we need now is for England to get through to the next round of the World Cup and our joy will be complete.

In spite of the general air of celebration over the weekend, one Hedon family's Jubilee has been struck with rather a sour note : at some time during the evening of June 1st, a Red Ensign was stolen from the flagpole in the garden of Mill House, Havenside, Hedon. This flag holds great sentimental value for the Johnson family and they would dearly love to have it back. They are offering a £25 reward - no questions asked - for the return, undamaged, of their flag.

Hedon's Jubilee celebrations continue with a special Senior Citizens Jubilee Entertainment on Saturday June 15th. This will be held in the Alexandra Hall on St. Augustine's Gate from 2pm until 9pm and will consist of entertainment and a buffet followed by a Bingo session. The cost of the full afternoon and evening is just £1.

The Royal Oak, on Main Street, Paull, is holding a regular Quiz Night every Sunday, starting at 9pm. This is for both teams and individuals and promises an enjoyable and informal evening's entertainment - everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun.

The battle to ensure the survival of Paull Primary School continues. A petition has been taken from door-to-door and then presented to the East Riding Education Authority, and virtually every window in the village is displaying a "Save Our School" poster. A campaign meeting has already been held, and the local authority is holding a meeting of parents, governors and staff on Tuesday June 18th and will be held in the Village Hall at 7pm as part of the official procedure. Watch this column for further developments.

As part of their on-going training, members of Hedon Red Cross together with members from Bridlington, Hull and Cottingham met at the Hedon Centre to take part in a course on Casualty Simulation Technical Training led by Lynne Covey. Lynne and two of her colleagues travelled to Hedon from National Headquarters to take the participants through a rigorous programme of training. The course lasted the full weekend, and each participant had to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of how the body reacts to injury and illness, and then put that knowledge into practice in a variety of situations. Although the subject matter was very intense, all of those taking part thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One result of their training is that they can provide those taking part in first aid training with realistic casualties who can successfully portray major illness (e.g. heart attack, stroke), major injury (e.g. broken back, spinal difficulties) or major bleeding in addition to the more mundane minor injuries and illness. This adds much to the participants' enjoyment and understanding of first aid and ensures that Hedon Red Cross stays at the forefront of training in the Hedon and Holderness area.
